Traffic came to a standstill in the heart of Nottingham city centre as protesters from various pressure groups and Nottingham residents temporarily closed Parliament Street to vehicles in symbolic retaliation against Boris Johnson's decision to suspend Parliament.
Around 1,000 people, some sporting placards and banners, marched from the Brian Clough statue to Conservative Party offices in King Edward Street, where the rally stopped to boo and hiss the building before returning on the same route back to King Street.
The move to suspend Parliament, known as proroguing, has caused outrage across the country, with more than one million people signing a petition to reverse the decision.
Escorted by police officers, traffic was stopped to accommodate the march.
The Prime minister made the decision to prorogue Parliament as he wants an opportunity to set up new bills to 'level up' spending on the NHS, education and policing.
This effectively shutdown Parliament, setting off a new ‘session’ and closing down the old one.
It means MPs are unlikely to have time to pass laws that could stop the UK leaving the European Union (EU) without a deal on October 31.
Protestors was asked about the march
“This is not about remain or leave, this is about our democracy and the way Boris Johnson is going about things is completely wrong.
“I think a no-deal Brexit threatens all of us in the long run. We are out here to try and stop that from happening.
“If Parliament is shut down, we’ll hold our own debate and protests until something is done.”
Another a Nottingham student, said: “I didn’t expect it to be this busy but I had a look to see what was going on and it’s incredible.
“It’s something I feel strongly about. As a young woman still studying, I worry what a no-deal Brexit might do for my future. And for Boris Johnson to stop Parliament to force a no-deal is completely absurd. It’s an attack on people’s right to democracy.”
Mark was also impressed by the turn out, which at one point meant the march snaked all the way from King Edward Street to the Victoria Centre Bridge.
He said: “It’s an unbelievable turn out and rightly so. People don’t want to sit by and watch this happen before them. Boris Johnson has no mandate to do this to us.
"He will ruin the country with a no-deal Brexit. We can’t let this happen.
“Events like this are happening everywhere. This is the movement that will change things for our country. I won’t let our younger generations get affected by the rich and elite.”
This is an issue that affects us all. It’s great to see people come out in support of this and what is happening to our democracy.
